Educational awards are highly important to recognise the outstanding work done by students. The private and public educational institutions grant awards to talented students so that they are further encouraged to perform well. Just like scholarships, awards are also categorised as per various disciplines. Student Loans
The government endeavours to provide primary education to all and sundry on a universal basis, higher education is progressively moving into the domain of private sector. The higher education is getting more and more costly and hence the need for institutional funding is necessary in this area. Therefore, educational loans are an investment for economic development and prosperity. Government of India in consultation with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Indian Banker's Association (IBA) has framed a Comprehensive Educational Loan Scheme to ensure that no deserving student in the Country is deprived of higher education for want of finances. The new scheme covers all type of courses including professional courses in schools and colleges in India and abroad.
Schemes for Higher Education
Higher Education is the shared responsibility of both the Centre and the States. The coordination and determination of standards in institutions is the constitutional obligation of the Central Government. The Central Government provides grants to UGC and establishes Central Universities in the country. Meritorious students, from families with or without necessary means, need an incentive or encouragement to keep on working hard in their studies and go to the next level of education in their academic career. This is where the scholarships and education loans play a crucial role.
International Scholarships/Fellowships
There are a number of scholarships available for students to pursue higher studies outside India. The Government of India, foreign countries and private institutions offer the international scholarships to academically outstanding students. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education administers only those scholarships/fellowships which are being offered by the foreign countries under Cultural Exchange Programmes and other programmes. The subject fields are generally chosen for those subject fields, facilities for which are available in the donor country and also keeping in view the national needs.
Schemes for Secondary Education
Secondary Education is the most significant stage in the educational hierarchy as it prepares the students for higher education and the world of work. The policy at present is to make secondary education of good quality available, accessible and affordable to all young persons in the age group of 14-18. At present, the following schemes targeted at secondary stage (i.e. class IX to XII) are being implemented in the form of Centrally Sponsored Schemes:
Schemes for Elementary Education
With the formulation of National Policy on Education, India initiated a wide range of programmes for achieving the goal of UEE through several schematic and programme interventions, such as Operation Black Board, Shiksha Karmi Project, Lok Jumbish Programme, Mahila Samakhya , District Primary Education Programme etc. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is implemented as India's main programme for universalising elementary education. Its overall goals include universal access and retention, bridging of gender and social category gaps in education and enhancement of learning levels of children.
Government initiatives
The Ministry of Human Resource Development makes every effort to support students with the help of several types of scholarships and schemes so that there are no pecuniary constraints at primary, secondary and higher level. Keeping in view the challenging scenario of global education, the Government of India has ensured to provide abundant opportunities to students with the help of various scholarships and exchange programmes through cooperation with several foreign countries.
